Internet Services and Applications

Reduce Costs -Make Better use of the Internet

Although most people currently use the internet for web surfing and email that limited use is soon going to be overshadowed by new uses like:

  • Internet meetings
  • Internet Applications (Software as a Service)
  • Internet Telephony (VOIP).
  • Entertainment (Movie downloads).

Not only will the Internet provide news ways of doing things it will offer tremendous opportunity to reduce communication and business costs. Take for example meetings.

If you consider the cost in travel, accommodation and time of a simple meeting were both parties need to travel then Internet or web meetings

Just travelling a few hundred miles to a meeting with 2 attendees can cost hundreds of pounds, but perhaps even more importantly it costs each attendee at least a day of time; most of it spent travelling.

However web based meetings can be arranged on the fly and can take place within minutes and all without the participants having to leave the office.

The Good news is that these services were until now the preserve of large companies. However with the spread of broadband and the growth of Internet services today's web meeting services are very reasonably priced making them attractive to businesses of any size.

Web Based Software

Before the PC all software ran on main frame/mini computer and the user interacted using a so called dumb terminal (monitor and keyboard). The PC changed all that and the software was installed on each PC.

No things are changing again and the software is moving not to a mainframe but to the Internet. The advantages are many:

  • Cheaper
  • Easier to maintain- effective zero maintenance
  • More flexible
  • Data is more secure (backed up on the Internet)

Applications like Google docs can replace Microsoft Word for all but the most demanding users and it is free, accessible on any computer at any time. There are no software licenses to buy, no software to maintain, no upgrades.

Of course not all applications will be free but the costs are minimal compared to standard software charges.

The main problem has always been the Internet connection, but with everyone moving to broadband this is no longer the case and Software as a Service is likely to become very popular in the coming years.

Internet Telephony (VOIP)

Most corporations are moving to using the Internet and Local networks to carry telephone traffic.

The telephone network has been digital for over 25 years with the last few miles to the home/office being analogue and for telephone companies as well as businesses the movement of telephone and internet traffic onto a single network has tremendous cost advantages.

Of course these with also benefit small businesses and home users as well. Not only that but it opens up a vast array of new services. Like the ability to take your home phone number with you on holiday or business.

I expect that within the next 10 years (end 2019) the old analogue telephone/telephone network will be largely forgotten just as vinyl LPs are today. See Internet/VOIP Phones and Services

Entertainment (Movie downloads).

You may not have noticed he decision by Toshiba to kill off HD DVD . It was greeted as a victory for the Blu-ray format but I believe Toshiba have simply decided to exit a dying market anyway?

I remember several years ago reading that the DVD was going to go the way of vinyl and would simply get replaced.

DVDs are used for movies and with many people moving to downloading movies from the internet the need for DVDs cluttering up the Lounge is probably coming to an end.
