The Home Network
Today more and more homes are looking to network home computers/laptops to exchange files, music and movies, access the Internet, and even play games.
To do this they are required to create/build a home network.
A home network is a LAN (local area network), but many call it a home area network , is made up of several components:
- The devices to connect- computers, printers, Fax machines etc
- Connection Media (Coax,twisted pair,wireless etc)
- Connection Technology or Connection access Mechanism (Ethernet, WI-FI, BlueTooth)
- Connection Devices- (switch,repeater,bridge etc)
Connection Media
This basically means how the computers are physically connected. The most common today being Unshielded twisted pair, and wireless (WI-FI).
Power-line adapters are also becoming increasingly common and will probably be the main method for home networking in the future.
Connection Technology or Connection access Mechanism
This is the way that data is packaged together for transmission over the media. The one we will consider are those found in home/small business networks
- Ethernet
- WI-FI
- ADSL/DSL
Networking Protocols
This is how the data is packaged for transmission between multiple computers. The most common and the only one used today in office and home networks and on the Internet is TCP/IP.
