How to connect to and Use The Internet

The internet is a network of computer networks. According to Wikipedia the use of the term “Internet” to describe a single global TCP/IP network originated in December 1974 with the publication of RFC 674.

Today it is difficult to imagine life without the Internet and yet it only came in to main stream use in the late 1990s.

The early days of the internet were the days of email and surfing. Although still important today they are being complemented by a whole new array of Internet services.

However before you can make use of these services you first need to connect to the Internet.

There are various ways of connecting to the Internet, however today there are two main mechanisms- ADSL/Broadband and Wireless (WI-FI). Dial up is also still used but usually only when travelling.

ADSL/Broadband

This is used for connecting a home or small business computer/computer network to the Internet. It is the main form of connection used. To obtain this type of connection you will need an ISP (internet service provider).

You can find out more in choosing an ISP. If you are in the Uk the one I use and recommend is BT total broadband

WI-FI

This is the same technology that is used in home networks. It is becoming very popular and there are an ever increasing number of WI-FI networks coming on line offering access to mobile devices (laptops and phones) for people on the move.

You can find more about this in the WI-FI section
