How To Set Up a Home Wireless Network

The first requirement for your network is a wireless access device. There are two to choose from:

  • Wireless Access Point
  • Wireless Router

Wireless Router

This is the preferred method as most ISPs offer wireless Internet access in the home via a wireless router which they normally supply. To understand what it is you need to understand the current way most users connect to the Internet.

The typical small wired network uses the configuration shown below:

In a wireless network the Router and Hub are replaced by a Wireless router which provides the same functionality but this time the PCs connect to the router using wireless. (see below)

The wireless router effectively is a router and Wireless Access point in one box. There are two parts to the setup:

Wireless Access Point

In older/existing networks the hub is replaced/augmented by a Wireless network access point which allows devices to connect to the Local network and then the Internet.
